Who I am:
I'm Jessica Hoff, and I love talking about money. I also love organizing- closets, drawers and anything else that's a mess.
So it makes perfect sense that I would also want to organize personal finances. Most people know their finances aren't as organized as they could be, and many people know they should be doing something differently. What to do, is typically what stops people. It's difficult to take action when you're unsure of the steps you should be taking.
And it's not entirely your fault.
Think about it- where should you have learned how to handle your money? Did you learn about saving and spending in school? Probably not. I didn't learn anything in school about saving, spending, credit cards or anything else having to do with my financial literacy. Did your family talk to you about money? Most likely not. Most of us have been taught not to talk about money. It's a sensitive topic, and I understand that people don't want to share how much money they earn, or how much debt they have. Many find it embarrassing that they either aren't making 'enough', or have made a financial 'error'. So how are we supposed to know what to do? It's possible to take a course, or to read a book, but in the end, you still have to do it yourself. Many people can't make the connection between reading a book, and taking action.
How I got here:
About a year ago, I watched Ramit Sethi's Netflix show- How to Be Rich (watch it!). It was an incredible 8 episode show that had a huge impact on me. I watched it with my new husband, and it stimulated conversations that we hadn't had before about our money. Then I began listening to his podcast- I Will Teach You To Be Rich (listen to it!). I was struck by the generosity of both the podcast participants and Ramit. The participants tell Ramit everything about their finances- the highs and lows, and everything in between. They share things most people would typically want to keep secret. Ramit listens without judgment and in the end, gives them a plan of action to get themselves on the right track. Finally, I bought Ramit's book- I Will Teach You To Be Rich (buy it!). What's great about the book is that it outlines everything you need to do to get yourself financially set up for the future.
From the moment I watch his Netflix show, I started telling everyone (and I mean everyone) to watch his show, listen to his podcast, and buy his book. What I found is that most people I spoke to didn't listen to me. They were interested, but I think in the end, people get scared to make a move, or they don't know where to start, or life takes over and they just don't get around to doing what they know they need to do. Then I decided- I'll just do it for them!
Where I'm going:
The reality is I've been helping people set up their finances for 20 years. I've encouraged (some would say nag, but I don't care!) colleagues to enroll in their 401k's and encouraged several friends (and my ex!) to open a HYSA.
The truth is you can watch/listen/read Ramit's work and organize your finances yourself. He outlines everything you need to do to get yourself set up. What I love about Ramit is that he is wants you to live "your rich life". He doesn't want you to stop spending money on the things you love.
I'm here for the people that don't want to set up their finances themselves- for whatever reason. I love helping people analyze their money flow, and coming up with a plan for saving and spending. I also love showing people how much their money will grow over time. Curious to know how much money you'll have at 65 (or any age)? Let me show you!
